Liver Qi Constraint: Abdominal Distention

Liver qi constraint can cause a blockage in the flow of qi, leading to distention in the upper abdomen. This is because the Liver is unable to regulate the flow of qi, resulting in a disruption in its movement. This can also lead to slowed and congealed fluids in the gastrointestinal system, as well as constipation and possibly fluid retention and/or phlegm-dampness. The Spleen may also be affected by this type of distention.

Textbook Presentation

  • Intermittent or persistent abdominal distention, fullness, and discomfort that is worse during times of stress or negative emotion
  • Belching, sighing, and flatulence that provide some relief from abdominal discomfort
  • Moodiness, irritability, quick temper, or depression
  • Hypochondriac discomfort, aches, or tightness on palpation, often worse on the right side
  • Rumbling noises in the stomach (borborygmus), loss of appetite, indigestion, acid reflux, heartburn
  • Tendency to have sluggish or alternating constipated and diarrhea stools
  • Thin or thick white coat on the tongue
  • Wiry pulse

Healing Approach

Dredge the Liver and regulate qi. Harmonize the Liver and Spleen/Stomach. Restore the qi dynamic and ease distention.

Herbal Formula

Each herb or product is sold separately, and it is recommended to take equal parts of each (about one full dropper) and combine it with water or juice. Gradually increase the dosage as tolerated.

It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.
