Painful Periods (Practitioner)

Painful periods, also known as dysmenorrhea, are a common problem for many women. The pain can occur in the lower abdomen or sacral region and may extend to the legs. In severe cases, there may be nausea and vomiting or even fainting. Causes of painful periods include liver-Qi stagnation, emotional strain, excessive exposure to cold and dampness, overwork, chronic illness, and excessive sexual activity. What Causes Painful Periods?

The liver, penetrating vessel, and directing vessel are responsible for the physiology of menstruation. Proper movement of blood relies on the free flow of liver-Qi and of the Qi of the penetrating vessel. Stagnation is the most important pathological condition causing painful periods. Emotional strain, excessive exposure to cold and dampness, overwork, chronic illness, excessive sexual activity, and other factors can all lead to liver-Qi stagnation and painful periods.

How Are Painful Periods Treated?

Treatment may include herbal medicine and other traditional Chinese medicine techniques. It is important to identify and address the underlying cause of the pain in order to effectively treat dysmenorrhea.
