Deficient Moisture
Yin deficiency and Empty Heat are two separate pathological conditions, despite the fact that Empty Heat is derived from Yin deficiency. Modern Chinese books often group these two conditions together, but in practice, Yin deficiency can last for an extended period without the symptoms or signs of Empty Heat.
The symptoms of Yin deficiency can vary depending on the organ involved, but they generally include night-sweating, dry throat, dry cough, dry lips, dry eyes, dry mouth, thirst with the desire to drink in small sips, and a tongue without coating, possibly with cracks. On the other hand, symptoms of Empty Heat include feelings of heat, 5-palm heat, malar flush, low-grade fever, a red tongue without coating, and a rapid pulse.
